Johannesburg (ANTARA News / Reuters) - South Africa could become victims of terrorist attacks during the World Cup hosts to be opened less than two weeks away, according to the Sunday Times newspaper reported, quoting from the various investigative reports.

Confession of a named Abdullah Azzam, al-Qahtani (alleged supporter of al Qaeda) who was captured in Iraq recently said that he was planning attacks against Dutch and Danish team. This admission raises cash for the debate about whether the World Cup tournament this year is facing a real threat of terrorism.

Qahtani's quote was immediately disputed the South African government.

South African officials said the status of South Africa as a member of the Non-Aligned Movement and the lack of support from local communities against guerrilla groups will alienate South Africa from terrorist attacks.

South African Government is also collaborating with FIFA, the foreign security agencies and Interpol to help strengthen the view that there is no threat to the World Cup in 2010.

However, analysts and security experts believe that the possibility of terrorist attacks can not be ruled out.

A national newspaper in Johannesburg wrote Ronald Sandee, director of the NEFA Foundation, which investigates terrorist activities in the world told the U.S. congressmen who are members of the caucus prevention of terrorism that there is a terror threat against the World Cup in 2010.

Sandee warned that the guerrillas from Pakistan and Somalia are training their members in the regions north of Mozambique and trainees may be heading to South Africa to plan a variety of possible attacks.

"I believe there will be 80 percent of the attacks. Some of the information I gather that some stadiums in South Africa will be a terror target either simultaneously or randomly. Also there is the possibility of a suicide attack," he said as quoted by national newspapers.

Remonstrance

Sandee in making his theory about a possible attack during the World Cup in South Africa took place said he received information from various sources such as radio frequencies and telephone conversations are covered disadapnya from Mauritania, Algeria, Mali, Pakistan and Yemen.

However, police refused to Sandee's theory.

"I do not know where he got such information. We were assured once again we have a plan and strategy that goes according to plan," said Police Senior Superintendent Vish Naidoo said South Africa.

"We have always held a meeting with intelligence every day and not an iota of conclusions that are made close to what was reported by the Sunday Times newspaper," he said.

Asked to comment about the Sunday Times newspaper claiming to get information from people in the South African government that said the South African security and intelligence services have to record 40 names of people suspected of being terrorists, Naidoo declined comment.

Although South Africa is never mentioned as one target of terrorism in recent years, several militant groups suspected of living in this country which is regarded as a safe place to hide.

Critics claim that widespread corruption among police and officials, including the passport had been bought for someone outside of South Africa has damaged efforts to combat terrorism.

Sandee said the match between the United States and England on June 12 will be able to become one of the targets of terror.

Matches involving Danish and Dutch teams are also expected to be a terror target because the guerrillas wanted revenge for some humiliation committed against Muslims in the past.
